Lošinj Island
Lošinj Island is an integral part of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago. The Lošinj archipelago includes, in addition to Lošinj, the islands of Unije, Ilovik, Susak and Vele Srakane, as well as many other islets, which in the summer months represent a real haven for romantics and those who want to enjoy beautiful beaches and the sun. The entire coast is practically teeming with very attractive coves and beaches. Mali Lošinj is the largest destination on the island, and also the largest port. It is located at the very bottom of the bay.
In the past, Cres and Lošinj were the same island, but since the artificial channel near Osor was built, the island has been divided into two parts and is now connected by a bridge.
Cres-Lošinj was called Apsyrtides in Roman times, and the name is associated with the mystical hero Apsyrt.
During the last century in these parts, every penetration of smaller or larger clans has left its mark on history.
The island was almost completely barren until the mid-13th century, and from then on, towards the 19th century, it developed into one of the greatest maritime powers, and the town of Mali Lošinj became the most important port on the Adriatic, after Trieste of course.
The people of Lošinj were known as the best sailors in the Mediterranean.
